Since June 2005, the Research Centre on Aging has been recognized as a research institute affiliated with the Université de Sherbrooke. The Centre obtained this status as a result of:

• the vast and diverse expertise of its researchers, who are all professors at the university;
• the interdisciplinarity which binds teams involved in research projects;
• the overall funds granted to studies developed at the Centre;
• the national and international reputation of the Centre.
   

Before 2005, the Centre was recognized as a centre of excellence (1997-2003), then as a research centre of the Programme interne de financement d’infrastructure (internal infrastructure financing program, 2003-2005).

The university dimension – research, education and technology assessment – affects all activities at the Research Centre. The affiliation of the Centre with the Université de Sherbrooke is made evident by the pressence of its researchers at the university in five faculties, fifteen departments, one school and four service areas.

Aging: a Priority Sector

The administration of the Research Centre on Aging is in close and ongoing contact with the faculties of the Université de Sherbrooke. The goal is to ensure that planning and development plans are articulated in concert with the hiring of new professors and researchers.

The faculty of medicine and health sciences as well as the faculty of fitness and physical education of the Université de Sherbrooke identified aging as a priority sector in their strategic plan for research.
Similarly the orientation towards gerontology, clearly identified by the faculty of letters and humanities, promotes collaboration and the hiring of professors and researchers in this field.

The Research Centre on Aging has always been a fertile ground for learning. Since 2005, it has been home to the university Centre universitaire de formation en gerontologie – CUFG.
